I'm sorry about the lack of update. I've been sick, so after work, I watched Show Me Love around six and went to bed for the rest of the day. I'm watching right now, then I'm laying down until work tonight.
However, not to leave you without anything meaningful, I should direct you to one of the better Fucking Amal sites online. www.showmelove.org is constantly updated with news about Swedish and Norwegian cinema, plus a large online forum. I suggest you check it out.

Day 7: Trailer park
As I mentioned in my first post, after an uncertain opening, Fucking Amal was sucessful enough in Sweden that it was released overseas as well. In English speaking countries, it was renamed the less-controversial Show Me Love. It was a much poorer title, but it stopped raving protesters from picketing movie theaters. Below are three trailers from Sweden, the United States, and Japan.
FA's homeland of Sweden
The United States (I don't like this trailer. I think it's too mundane)
Japan
As for today's viewing, I'm watching, as usual, on my Vision:M. Hey, a 2 1/2 inch screen is better than nothing. Fine picture quality as well.

Day Five: Lukas Moodysson, Pre-Amal
As promised, this is the first in a series of posts about the people behind Show Me Love. First, the writer and director, Lukas Moodysson.

Photo: www.imdb.com
Karl Frederik Lukas Moodysson was born on January 17, 1969 in the Southern Swedish city of Malmo to a family of farmers. He and his parents lived in a commune when he was a child, which influenced his later film Tillsammans (Together). Lukas' parents divorced in the late seventies. Around this time, Lukas saw Ingmar Bergman's legendary film Fanny and Alexander. It is a film which dealt with a dissolving marriage, something which was familiar to young Lukas. Soon after his parent's split, Lukas began to write poetry, and by the age of seventeen, he was a published author, puting out a collection of poems entitled Det spelar ingen roll var blixtarna slår ner (It Doesn't Matter Where the Lightning Strikes), then promptly dropped out of school. Four more anthologies of poems followed, until his early 20s, when he decided to enroll in Sweden's only film school, Dramatiska Institutet. After a series of three short films, Lukas would begin work on his first full length feature - Fucking Amal.
Alright, I'm not much of a biography writer, but I didn't want to just copy and paste from the websites where I found this information. Here's hoping I'll get better over the next year.
I'm watching SML right now on my Zen, so that's five. I have to make sure to fit in tomorrow's viewing early, due to a long work day.

Day Four: About project SML
To the one person reading this blog (myself), you may wonder how I'm watching Show Me Love. Probably on DVD. Maybe on an iPod. Hell, it could be on VHS. The answer, my friend(s) is all of the above.

Above, you see the three methods I have of completing project SML. First is my DVD copy, purchased in 2004. Next is my already mentioned Creative Zen Vision:M. It is sort of like an iPod, as in it holds 30G of musice, movies and pictures. Last but not least is good ol' archaic VHS cassette. I taped an airing of SML on Cinemax in 2002 on SP mode, one of it's final American airings, to my knowledge. I also have a VHS copy recorded on SLP mode. Lower quality, but I could fit more stuff on the same tape.
Right now, I'm watching on my Vision:M as I type this at 11:40 AM. Tomorrow, I'll start a series of posts about the various people involved in the making of SHow Me Love and the story of it's creation. See me then.

Day Two: About me

This is me. My name is Andrew Weaver, a 22-year old register monkey/writer in Reynoldsville, Pa. Yes, this is the dorkiest picture I could find. I still live at home with my mother, stepfather, and brother. I can't drive, and I'm single (yes, those two are linked.)
Reynoldsville is a small little town located two hours southeast of Pittsburgh of about 3,000 people. Usually, the only things to do are drink and walk. Seeing as how I'm straight edge, I just walk. The town in deathly boring, which is probably one reason I became so attached to Show Me Love. The characters are in the same predicament I am: stuck in a boring little hamlet where there is absolutely nothing to do. I've often refered to Reynoldsville as "Amal, USA."
I watched SML today at 4:30 PM while cleaning up my room. Tomorrow I'll try to fitmy viewing in before I go to work at 6 AM.
Until next time, enjoy my dorkiness.

Day One: Introduction

On October 23, 1998, a small independant feature written and directed by a former poet, and starring two amateur actresses opened in a few theaters in it's native country of Sweden. Originally only set for release in Sweden due to low finances, this film suddenly and unexpectedly boomed in it's homeland, making enough money to rival Titanic at the top of the list of all-time highest grossing films in Sweden. Soon it was released in even more countries worldwide, and although it's greatest financial success came in Scandinavia, it appeared on critics top-ten lists all over the globe. The original name of the film was Fucking Amal, but in most English speaking nations, it is refered to as Show Me Love. Today is the 9th anniversary of it's release.
Today begins a 1-year personal project that I am dubbing "project SML." For the next 365 days, I will watch Show Me Love once a day, ending on October 23, 2008 - the tenth anniversary. Honestly, I hope I have the attention span to undertake this.
I began watching at 10:30 am this morning with my first viewing on my Zen Vision:M. Here's to an entire year of Love.
